My soon-to-be HTPC (Home Theatre PC)

Sometime next week I will set myself up with a home theatre PC.

I'm going to use MediaPortal to run it. I saw a very slick skin, Xface, for it, which I might start off with.

Depending on what the motherboard, of the second hand machine I am being given, supports (PCI-E or PCI). I will either get the Leadtek WinFast DTV2300H or DTV2000 H.

I have also purchased a cheap yum cha Chinese Media Centre Remote knockoff. Hopefully it will work like the real Microsoft remote.

Fingers crossed that everything will turn out as I want. I'll let you know once it's up and running.

Ubun-back-to XP

Well after using Ubuntu 7.10 for a while, I have gone back to Windows XP. The reason was stability. Ubuntu froze regularly, at least once per day. Having since looked at my computer a bit more perhaps it was to do with power management, ACPI 2.0, being turned off in the BIOS. Regardless, I'll wait another version or two before I try it again. I will miss the Compiz Fusion effects though.

Unfortunately, going back to Windows XP has given me a new problem that I didn't have before, though it may just be a coincidence that it occured the same time as installing XP. Whilst playing music or watching movies the sound/video pauses/stutters occasionally. Originally it was almost every 15 seconds, but after cleaning the dust from my case, installing a new power supply and case fan. It seems a lot better, particularly now that the CPU/motherboard temperature has dropped significantly.

In case you're interested, my CPU temperature went from idling at about 55-60°C to about 30-35°C. Motherboard from about the same (~55-60°C) to 40-45°C. I would like to drop the motherboard temperature further and might buy an additional case fan.

P.S. I did enjoy a lovely selection of partition problems going back to XP, but fortunately managed to solve them all, thanks to the Ultimate Boot CD (which has saved me on numerous occasions). Also my latest nLite installation worked well.

Emesene (An alternate Messenger client)

Every now and then I look at alternatives to various programs I use. Over the past week I have been looking at a suitable replacement for Windows Live Messenger for my Ubuntu 7.10 installation. After selecting and trialling programs such as Pidgin, aMSN and Kmess, I have stumbled upon Emesene.

Emesene, like aMSN and Kmess, is only interested in the MSN/Windows live network and thus seems to have more complete features and a more accurate mirror of the official client than other multi-protocol clients such as Pidgin.

Out of the box it looks and acts quite a bit like the official messenger client, although there are a few unpolished edges. It can also be extended with plugins. At the moment what I like most about it is that it mirrors the look of the official client better than any other client I've used so far, and it is not as complicated as some of the others, particularly in the setup/configuration areas.

After only using it for a short time, I've noticed it has some nice features such as showing the contacts display picture in the taskbar for contact windows which makes it easier to work out which window belongs to who.

I'll see how I go with it, but it looks promising so far.
